EUROPE – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was wounded in the abdomen following a government meeting on Wednesday, as reported by Slovak media.

Shots were heard by a Reuters witness after the meeting in Handlova, northeast of Bratislava.

Police say they swiftly apprehended a suspect, and emergency services dispatched a helicopter for the injured PM.

His shooting has sent shockwaves across Europe, just weeks before EU Parliament elections. Leaders from all sides condemn the apparent assassination attempt, calling it an attack on democracy.

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova denounced the violence, urging an end to hateful rhetoric.
