Sounding Off: Residents React To Energy Reforms

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Minister of Energy and Transport JoBeth Coleby-Davis revealed those details at the announcement of new and comprehensive energy reforms outside the Office of the Prime Minister yesterday. Today, we asked residents how they felt about the shift in focus to renewable energy options and the equity rate adjustment that begins next month, which will reduce the base tariff rate to zero on the first 0 to 200 kilowatt hours for residential consumers with low and moderate electricity usage.

Tamiko Armbrister, a hospitality professional, said, “The rate reduction I don’t think… quick fix overnight.”

But some feel like even if the reduction is just twenty dollars, it can make a difference for the average family. Donielle Davis, an engineering professional, mentioned, “With the economic climate… twenty dollars toward something else.”

While this resident says the reduction would be a great help, he says there’s something else the average Bahamian needs. “We need… most definitely.”
