GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – After a series of suicides in recent months, many are asking what can be done to help those who are struggling with their mental health. One Grand Bahamian mental health counsellor discusses the warning signs and measures the public can take to protect their mental health.

Jessica Russell, a mental health counsellor at the Family Medical Centre in Grand Bahama, tells Bahamians to watch for some of the warning signs for a loved one who may need support.

Russell also notes that increasing disinterest in relationships or favorite activities can also be an indication that it may be time to reach out.

The person-centered therapist also says having a strong support system from family and friends can help, but that it’s both okay and important to know the limits of your ability to help.

Russell also offered some tips to help protect yourself from extra stressors, including a healthy diet, sleep schedule, and practicing healthy boundaries. She also advises the public to take care not to overcommit yourself, and to remember that “no” can be a complete sentence.
