Stingers, Rattlers Win GSSSA Senior Titles

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The GSSSA postseason concluded with the C.V. Bethel Stingrays and C.I. Gibson Rattlers claiming titles in their respective divisions.

The Stingrays won the senior girls championship with a dominant performance in game 3, a 67-44 win over the C.R. Walker Knights.

Trinity Bodie was named series MVP.

Stingrays Head Coach Shantelle Rolle talked about the adjustment her team made for the close-out game.

In senior boys play, the C.I. Gibson rattlers defeated the Anatol Rodgers T’wolves, 58-47 in the third and deciding game. 

Tashon Butler scored a game-high 27 points in the wire-to-wire win.

An emotional Kevin Johnson knew this was bigger than basketball.

Track and Field

Next on the sports calendar for the GSSSA is track and field.

The organization announced plans for the 30th edition of its meet, February 28 – March 1.

NBA

Buddy Hield has had a seamless transition to the city of brotherly love and to the 76ers roster. 

Hield is averaging 22.5 points, 7.5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in four games since being acquired from the Indiana pacers.

In Wednesday’s 109-104 loss to the Miami Heat, Hield had his first double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 assists.

Swimming

Competition is underway for Team Bahamas at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar. 

In the 100m free, Marvin Johnson finished 42nd overall in 51.01 seconds.

Rhanishka Gibbs finished 38th in the 100m breast in 1:12.27 seconds and Lamar Taylor finished 40th in the 50m fly in 24.85 seconds.

Gibbs will also swim the 50m free, Taylor still has the 50m free and 50m back, while Johnson will also compete in the 100m fly. Victoria Russell will swim in the 50m breast and 50m fly.

The team competed in the mixed 4×100 medley and finished 24th overall in 4:06.91 seconds.
