USA – The possibility of adding a Category 6 to the hurricane scale is being debated among experts due to the increasing strength of storms fueled by warming ocean waters.

The proposal, outlined in a study published in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests extending the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale beyond the current Category 5 threshold of 157 mph sustained winds.

However, some experts caution against overemphasizing wind hazards, noting the importance of communicating all storm-related risks, including storm surge, rainfall, and tornadoes.

While the study highlights the need for awareness about the intensifying hurricanes, it remains uncertain whether a Category 6 designation will be adopted by the National Hurricane Center.
