ATLANTIC OCEAN – Scientists say a vital system of ocean currents could collapse within a few decades if the world continues to pump out planet-heating pollution.

A new study found the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current could collapse around the middle of the century or as early as 2025.

The current plays a crucial role in the climate system, helping regulate global weather patterns, and scientists say its collapse would cause more extreme winters and sea levels to rise, affecting the tropics.
