NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 38-year-old man has been charged with capital murder after 12-year-old Adriel Moxey was found raped and murdered in bushes near her home.

The capital murder charge would allow prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Chris Ferguson if he’s convicted of the November 18 murder.

Adriel never made it home after she completed extracurricular classes at Anatol Rodgers High School on Marshall Road around 6 p.m. on November 18.

Prosecutors allege that Adriel was accosted by Ferguson as she walked an unlit track road that led to her home alone. He’s accused of strangling her to death and raping her.

She was found in bushes partially naked, and with a piece of cloth around her neck on November 20.

Ferguson was not required to enter pleas to charges of murder, unlawful detention with intent to have Unlawful and unlawful sexual intercourse when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley.

Ferguson did not have a lawyer and asked the magistrate if one could be appointed for him.

Bail was denied and the matter was adjourned to May 1 for the presentation of a voluntary bill of indictment.
