NASSAU, BAHAMAS – While the price of eggs has plummeted, government is still forging ahead with boosting local egg production.

Agriculture Minister Clay Sweeting says the plan is to produce 28 million eggs once the project is in full production.

Launched in February – the Golden Yolk Project seeks to increase Bahamian egg production and slashed the country’s import bill by $12.5 million, according to the agriculture minister.

It came at a time when egg prices soared over the $7 mark.

Today prices have dropped more than 60 percent.

Sweeting says the goal is to ramp up the production of eggs by the millions once the project is in full swing.

The Davis Administration has also set aside $15 million for the golden yolk program for the production of eggs in The Bahamas. Sweeting revealing as much during the week’s press briefing on Thursday.

He says this will result in the production of six new grow houses.

Meanwhile, Sweeting says the response from farmers has been positive.
