NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Tropical Storm Melissa is intensifying, and forecasters say it could become a catastrophic hurricane.

The storm is already unleashing torrential rain across Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with severe flood risks threatening millions.

At least three people have been killed in Haiti as Melissa causes devastating flooding, and meteorologists warn the storm could strengthen into a serious Category 4 hurricane.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned of “life-threatening and catastrophic flash flooding and landslides”throughout Hispaniola.

Melissa is expected to bring up to 14 inches of rain in the coming days to Haiti and the Dominican Republic — and potentially the same amount to Jamaica, according to the NHC.
