ATHENS, GREECE – The friendlies are done and now we head to the games that count – our senior men’s basketball team prepares to take on the world and achieve a feat never before accomplished in Bahamian sports.

Team Bahamian completed the Aegean Acropolis Tournament today after a pair of exhibitions against much higher-ranked competition, no.17 Montenegro and no.14 Greece.

Up next for Team Bahamas, they continue their road trip with a berth to the Paris Olympics on the line.

They head to Valencia, Spain for the final Olympic qualifying tournament, July 2-7.

The Bahamas is placed in pool B alongside Finland and Poland. Pool A includes Spain, Angola and Lebanon.

It’s simple – win and you get in – the winner of the six team group advances to the Paris Olympics.

Track and Field

The BAAAs Kids Athletics, Junior and Senior Nationals got underway last night at the original Thomas A. Robinson stadium with the country’s top athletes still looking to qualify for national teams.

In the men’s 100m Wanya McCoy took first in 10.16 seconds ahead of Terrence Jones in 10.49 seconds and Samson Colebrooke in 10.50 seconds

Camile Rutherford took first in the women’s 100m in 11.47 seconds ahead of Anthaya Charlton in 11.53 seconds and Printassia Johnson finished third in 11.83 seconds.

In the under 20 division, Carlos Brown Jr took the men’s race in  10.46 seconds and Shayann Demeritte won the women’s race in 12.14 seconds.

In the prelims for the 400m, Steven Gardiner eased into tonight’s final as the top qualifier in 45.95 seconds.

On the women’s side, Javonya Valcourt ran 52.29 seconds to finish ahead of Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 53.02.

In highlights from the field, Keyshawn Strachan threw 73.04m in the men’s javelin and Charisma Taylor had a mark of 13.80m in the women’s triple jump.

Rugby

The Bahamas Rugby Football Union is back on the pitch this weekend to take on international competition.

The BRFU’s senior men’s national team will continue play in the Rugby America North Caribbean Cup when they take on Jamaica, Saturday at 4pm at the Freeport Rugby Club

The Rugby Americas North Men’s Championship is played under a round-robin format split into two zones.

The common opponent between the two countries thus far is Bermuda.

The Bahamas suffered a 33-5 loss to Bermuda last month while Jamaica recently won their first match over Bermuda in program history, 19 – 14.

Olympics

The Bahamas Olympic Committee, government officials, federation executives, and corporate stakeholders all came together to mobilize support for Team Bahamas ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

A night of celebration included the reveal of Team Bahamas Puma-designed uniforms and donations from Corporate Bahamas.
