NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Thanksgiving weekend usually means ham, turkey and family gatherings, but in The Bahamas it also means one thing: basketball. From World Cup qualifiers to college tournaments and even the NBA, hoops took center stage across the country.

Team Bahamas Falls to Canada in World Cup Qualifiers

Team Bahamas returned to the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium on Saturday for World Cup action, taking on Canada in the opening window of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers. Canada came out firing, opening the game on a 16–5 run and never looking back. The Bahamas lost 111–75.

Dominick Bridgewater led the way for Team Bahamas with 16 points and an impressive 12 assists, though he shot 3 for 12 from the field. Kai Jones followed with 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Canada was led by former Kentucky national champion and Gonzaga standout Kyle Wiltjer, who finished with 22 points and 6 rebounds.

Team Bahamas will now look to regroup as they prepare to face Canada again on Monday in Toronto.

Vanderbilt Wins the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament

Paradise Island was buzzing as the Battle 4 Atlantis wrapped up on Saturday. The Vanderbilt Commodores cruised past the St. Mary’s Gaels to take home the title.

Duke Miles poured in 25 points for Vanderbilt while Jalen Washington added 19 off the bench. St. Mary’s was led by Paulius Murauskas with 24 points and Mikey Lewis with 19.

Bahamian Talent Shines in the NBA

Bahamian stars also hit the hardwood in the NBA during the busy weekend.

Deandre Ayton and the Los Angeles Lakers topped Klay Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks 129–119. Ayton delivered a standout performance with 17 points on 8 for 9 shooting, plus 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Lakers guard Austin Reaves continued his hot streak with 38 points and 8 rebounds. Luka Doncic added 36 points and 11 rebounds for Dallas.

Klay Thompson contributed 10 points off the bench, knocking down three three-pointers.

Coach Yo and Ole Miss Stay Perfect at 6–0

In college basketball, Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s No. 13 ranked Ole Miss Rebels improved to 6–0 after defeating the Wisconsin Badgers 65–56 at the Daytona Beach Classic.

Christeen Iwuala led the Rebels with 20 points and 8 rebounds as the team continues its undefeated run.

Goombay Splash Tennis Tournament Showcases International Junior Talent

Basketball was not the only sport making noise this weekend. Young tennis players from across the world competed in New Providence as the ITF J30 Goombay Splash wrapped up at the National Tennis Center.

The tournament featured rising athletes from Germany, Brazil, Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom and The Bahamas. Bahamian player Patrick McTaggert reached the semifinal round before falling to Canadian competitor Luka Radosavljevic.

Germany’s Nick Mertgens and Johan Schtick competed in the boys singles final on Saturday morning. Mertgens already secured a trophy earlier in the week after winning the doubles title with American partner Abner Pullin Yu. The pair defeated Canada’s Danylo Glinyi and Radosavljevic in the final.

On the girls side, Canadians Layla Nota and Alexia Normandin battled for the singles championship. The duo previously teamed up to win the doubles title after defeating fellow Canadians Diana Brustur and Elle Tucci.
