ELEUTHERA, BAHAMAS – If you’ve ever been to Rock Sound, Eleuthera chances are you’ve made a stop at the Marketplace Supermarket.
Over the last half a century, the Marketplace Supermarket has kept its shelves stocked with groceries to feed thousands of Eleuthera residents.
It’s a staple of that community and it’s owned and operated by the Sands family.
Co-owner Thomas Sands says it started with his parents and he and his siblings have continued the dream.
Sands says the store has evolved over the decades and a key part of the plan has been investing in people and technology.
The Eleuthera businessman says a part of the evolution has been stocking shelves with locally grown products that includes vegetables grown at a hydroponics farm.
With an ongoing trade war between the United States and the rest of the world, food security has been a hot topic.
Sands says from his own experience the process is rewarding but also costly.
