EUROPE – The World Meteorological Organization is warning that the “Summer of extremes” is still ongoing, as several countries in Europe brace for a new heatwave.

Europe is battling the effects of scorching temperatures which have reached worrying levels globally, with July being the hottest month recorded on both land and sea.

The heat and dry weather this summer have contributed to unusually severe wildfires in Europe and western Canada.

Hawaii’s Maui was also hit by wildfires which have killed at least 106 people, forced tens of thousands to evacuate, and devastated the historic resort city of Lahaina.

Last year, heatwaves resulted in over 61,600 heat-related fatalities across 35 European countries.
