NASSAU, BAHAMAS – An annual staple at the Jeff Rodgers Summer Basketball Camp, the Thompson family continues its tradition of community outreach with the event.

Bahamian basketball icon, former no.1 overall draft pick and two time nba champion Mychal Thompson, alongside his eldest son, Mychel – a Bahamian national team standout, visited the camp on Wednesday at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.

Mychal was recruited from The Bahamas to Miami Jackson High and eventually to the University of Minnesota. He was the top overall pick in the 1978 draft by the Portland Trailblazers and enjoyed a 13 year NBA career highlighted by a pair of championships with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The entrance of the new Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium that leads to the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium is named in his honor.

Always a strong presence in The Bahamas, the Thompson family are frequent participants in the camp’s festivities.

Mychel has been a member of the senior men’s national team since 2014 and now serves as a member of the coaching staff.

Camp Director Jeff Rodgers said the Thompson family story serves as an inspiration to the campers each year.

Equestrian

A historic moment for Equestrian Bahamas was highlighted by a top three finish in their first international show jumping event.

The team finished third at the World Clubs Tournament in Lamotte-Beuvron, France.

China topped the point standings, followed by the Czech Republic in second, and the four ladies of Team Bahamas – Katerina Coello, Emma Johnston, Ella Saidi, and Sienna Tinker in third.

Italy, and France rounded out the top five.

Basketball

Team Bahamas is off to  a tough start at the u15 Centrobasket Championships for women.

The team lost 80-38 in their tournament opener Wednesday in David, Panama.

Andica Curtis was the lone Bahmain player in double figures with 12 points.

Tahjanique Morley finished with nine points and Ricarra Beadle scored seven.

Valentina Perrez and Sofia Chavarria led Costa Rica with 19 points each.

The Bahamas trailed by just two at the end of the first quarter, 16-14, but were held to just 14 points over the next two quarters combined.

Costa Rica outscored them 41-16 in the second half to take control for good.

The Bahamas took on el Salvador Thursday afternoon in game two.

Baseball

If the MLB All Star Futures game announced his arrival on the main stage – Sebastian Walcott’s production this summer is ensuring we’ll be hearing his name for a while.

The Texas Rangers’ top prospect hit back-to-back home runs for the Hickory Crawdads this week.

His ninth on the season came Wednesday night against the Greenville Drive.

Playing in short and batting third in the lineup, walcott went 3-4 with an rbi and scored two runs.

In 14 games thus far in July, Walcott is hitting .306 with 5 rbi, 5 doubles, 3 stolen bases and two home runs.
