NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history the Battle of Nassau took place in 1720.

The Bahamas Historical Society notes Governor Woodes Rogers successfully defended the island of New Providence from an attack by a larger Spanish raiding party from Cuba.

The Spanish made off with over 100 enslaved persons from the city, although the assault on Nassau itself was repelled and the invasion was a failure.

In 1965 The Beatles came to The Bahamas to film scenes from their second film ‘Help!’.

The group stayed at the Balmoral Club, now the Sandals Royal Bahamian hotel in Cable Beach.
