NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, Harcourt Gladstone Malcolm was born in Nassau, New Providence, Bahama Islands, on this day in 1875.

Malcolm was a lawyer, politician and Speaker of the House of Assembly. His father, Ormond Malcom served as Speaker of the House from 1868 – 1897, but the younger Malcolm, holds the distinction of having served the longest term as Speaker of the House, from 1914 until his death from influenza and cerebral hemorrhage on 26th December 1936.


In 1932, The Bahama Islands ceased to be a part of the Archdiocese of New York and became an independent ecclesiastical unit.

Reverend John Bernard Kevenhoerster was elevated to prefect apostolic of the islands and became Bishop of the Bahama Islands the following year.
