THE BAHAMAS – On September 30, 2000, at the Games of the 27th Olympiad in Sydney, Australia, The Bahamas won the gold medal in the women’s 4×100 meters relay.

The team that ran in the final consisted of Savatheda Fynes, Chandra Sturrup, Pauline Davis-Thompson, and Debbie Ferguson, finishing in a time of 41.95 seconds. Eldece Clarke-Lewis, who ran in the first heat and the semifinal heat, also won a gold medal.

For their achievement at the Olympics, the athletes were dubbed “The Golden Girls.”

2012: Marco Archer’s Family Pushes for Action

One year after the abduction and murder of 11-year-old Marco Archer, his family expressed disappointment that no steps had been taken to establish a sex offenders registry or Marco’s Law.

This prompted then-National Security Minister Bernard Nottage to promise a greater focus on the issue that year.

“The problem is, we need to take steps to prevent these things from happening. We need to make sure that our system works, and that we are able to identify people early so that we can protect the accused person but also protect the public.”

2021: Demolition of the Church Hill Building

In 2021, demolition began on the Church Hill Building, the historic site where weekly Cabinet meetings were once held.

In October 2020, then-Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis announced plans for a new Cabinet office at the existing site in downtown Nassau. Today, the site is now a parking area.
