NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Tourism numbers in The Bahamas are soaring, with cruise arrivals hitting record highs.

Foreign arrivals across all islands in 2023 equaled to 1.72 million, surpassing the 1.67 million for an arrivals recorded in 2019 by 3.3 percent.

Tourism Minister Chester Cooper says the problem isn’t demand but room capacity, pointing out that without more hotel rooms, The Bahamas can’t accommodate more stopover visitors.

However, opposition leader Michael Pintard says that’s not enough, while speaking with reporters just before entering the House of Assembly on Wednesday, Pintard argued that government is neglecting a key sector, stopover visitors.

Cooper outlined a $10 billion investment plan to expand tourism infrastructure, with developments in Abaco, Exuma, Grand Bahama, and Eleuthera.

He also highlighted initiatives supporting vacation rentals, aimed at empowering Bahamians and boosting community-based tourism.

Coopers says he extends an open invitation for the opposition leader to meet with tourism professionals to better understand the industry and its numbers.
