NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – During the this year’s budget debate it was announced that the government allocated a total of 20 million dollars for a a road remediation and drainage infrastructure project in Pinewood.

Last evening a public town hall meeting was held in the area to reveal the plans for the system.

Our Denielle Miller was there and gives this report.

It’s an issue that’s haunted the community for decades.

As heavy rain hits the capital, the streets of Pinewood are converted to lakes – causing damage to the homes and personal items of hundreds of residents.

Senior civil engineer at the Ministry of Works and Family Island Affairs, Francis Clarke explains why this happens.

He says the current drainage structure is outdated – adding that the ministry, in partnership the Inter Development Bank, intends to modernize the system.

This project is estimated to cost 20 million dollars and the plan is to construct open channels along the sides of the roads – transferring water into culverts, settling ponds, then to 3 canals.

Clarke assured residents who questioned the potential environmental impact – that they have done their research.

Area member of parliament, Myles Laroda, says this is not the first time documents were presented to eradicate the vexing issue. However, this presentation takes into consideration the reality of our current climate.
