UNITED STATES – The stalemate in Washington continues as both Democratic and Republican plans to end the government shutdown failed in the senate this week.

House Speaker Mike Johnson says he won’t bring members back for a standalone bill, while senate leaders say the White House will have to find ways to keep troops paid.

The shutdown has already led to layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services – with federal workers across multiple divisions receiving reduction-in-force notices.

With the senate now in recess until next Tuesday, the government will remain closed for at least two weeks – meaning military members are set to miss their October 15th paycheck.
