UNITED STATES – President Donald Trump is ordering the biggest shift in U.S. drug policy in decades, directing the Attorney General to move cannabis from schedule 1 to schedule 3.

The White House says cannabis would still be illegal federally but the change would allow more medical research and ease tax rules for state-legal dispensaries.

Trump says the move responds to years of requests from cancer patients, people with seizure disorders and veterans with chronic pain.

Advocacy groups praised the decision, while some Republicans warn it could normalize drug use. Public polling continues to show most Americans support legalization.
