NEW YORK – The World Meteorological Organization says 2025 is on track to become one of the warmest years ever recorded, adding to mounting evidence that the global climate crisis is accelerating.

WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett says every fraction of a degree now has life-altering consequences for communities facing floods, droughts, and extreme heat. The agency’s latest data shows greenhouse gas concentrations and ocean heat, already at record levels in 2024, continue to climb this year.

Meanwhile, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres blasted world leaders for falling short of commitments to limit warming to 1.5°C, as Brazil prepares to host this year’s global climate summit.
