UNITED STATES – The U.S. vetoed a U.N. resolution Wednesday, calling for an immediate Gaza cease-fire, citing no link to the release of hostages held by Hamas.

The resolution received broad support, passing 14-1 in the security council, but was blocked due to U.S. opposition.

U.S. officials stated a cease-fire without releasing hostages would embolden Hamas.

Israel echoed the stance, calling the resolution a betrayal of hostages’ fates.

Hamas condemned the veto, accusing the U.S. of complicity in Gaza’s destruction.
