ITALY – An explosion in the center of the northern Italian city of Milan set several vehicles on fire. The blast came from a van carrying oxygen cylinders.

The city’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala, ruled out foul play and confirmed that no-one had died in the incident and added that the driver had sustained only light injuries.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which had sent clouds of thick black smoke into the sky.

Eyewitnesses said the fire appeared to have spread to a nearby building, which was evacuated.

A local school was also evacuated.

The owner of restaurant ‘Salt’, Steven Walters, was working when he rushed to help a driver covered in burns as he was trying to put out a fire that broke out in his van while he was carrying oxygen cylinders.

Moments later the van exploded, setting nearby cars and motorbikes ablaze.
