VENEZUELA – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Monday he does not care about the U.S. government’s opinion regarding the contested July presidential elections.

Maduro’s claim of winning a third term in the July 28 vote has sparked nationwide protests, with many demanding that his opponent be recognized as the true winner.

Venezuela’s electoral authority reported that Maduro won with 51% of the vote, while the opposition’s tally showed it likely received 67%.

Meanwhile the U.S. says there was “overwhelming evidence” of the opposition’s victory.
