Volunteer Month Wraps Up

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – National Volunteer Month is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean your awareness of how you can be an asset to your community.

From the British Legion Bahamas Branch caring for our nation’s veterans, to the Bahamas Humane Society, the Great Commission’s efforts to feed the hungry, the Salvation Army, and The Bahamas Association for the Physically Disabled, the short list of options is just the tip of the iceberg of possibilities when it comes to how you can serve a purpose outside of yourself.

A great example of a woman who lived this dedication to service is one we got to learn more about while researching the brave eleven earlier this month, our female Bahamian platoon in World War II.

Dorothy Wisdom, then Dorothy Roberts, was one of those eleven women, and she would go on to become a beloved educator and mentor to many.

We spoke with two of her sons, Dr. Keith and Evon Wisdom to learn more about her motivations and her legacy.

Evon urged people step beyond speaking about issues and choose helpful action.

Dorothy Wisdom led a life of service until the very end, she was still working as a volunteer teacher when she passed, the impact of which deeply moved her sons.

So, look around this holiday season, and see where how you can give the gift of service this season, and how maybe you can carry that spirit of service into 2023.
