NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Bus drivers on New Providence promise to strike for as long as it takes to get the attention of government. The Bahamas Unified Bus Drivers Union holding a series of peaceful demonstrations across the island, Monday.

The group not satisfied with the relief package promised by Housing and Transport Minister Jobeth Coleby-Davis. Our Marlena Leonard has the story.

At Arawak Cay the Bahamas Unified Bus Drivers Union is conducting a peaceful protest, demanding that they’re heard by the prime minister himself.

General Secretary Corvell Colebrooke says an estimated 75% of bus drivers are off the road today. This comes after Coleby-Davis promised relief packages for bus drivers in the country at the end of the month.

Member of the union, Leroy Thompson says, that’s not what they need.

Thompson says the issue of plates is one he has personally been pressing for over 35 years. He says the fact that plates are limited makes it difficult for bus drivers to turn a profit.
