CANADA – A strike by plane mechanics forced WestJet, Canada’s second largest airline, to cancel hundreds more flights Sunday, affecting about 110,000 travelers over the Canada day weekend.

Despite a government directive for binding arbitration, 680 workers walked off the job Friday.

WestJet, grappling with legal uncertainties, has canceled 829 flights since Thursday, reducing its fleet to 32 planes and causing widespread travel disruptions.

Both the airline and the mechanics’ union accuse each other of stalling negotiations.
