NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Mother’s Day is a time set aside to honor the women who raised and shaped us. For many across the globe, this special day is more than just an occasion—it’s personal.

Mother’s Day began in the United States in the early 1900s when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her late mother and pushed for a national holiday. By 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Since then, Bahamian families have embraced the occasion, with churches often leading the charge with special Sunday services dedicated to mothers.

Restaurants and resorts also see lots of reservations, as families treat the women in their lives to a well-deserved meal. For students, in true Bahamian fashion, they often show their love through handmade cards and performances.

For many, it’s not just about biological mothers—it’s about their aunties, grandmothers, godmothers, and some women in the community who are celebrated for their guidance and care. The day also brings bittersweet emotions for those remembering mothers who’ve passed on or those navigating motherhood during difficult circumstances. Still, the meaning of the day remains the same—gratitude, honor, love, and a chance to say thank you.
