NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A former acting labor director is joining a growing list of critics calling out the Bahamas Trade Union Congress (TUC) and its president for signing a memorandum of understanding with the Progressive Liberal Party while they were in opposition. Two years later, the union is at odds with the government, claiming they didn’t keep their word.

Former Acting Labor Director and former Bahamas Public Services Union President, John Pinder, says he has no sympathy for the TUC. The TUC and its president are complaining that the government is not living up to the memorandum of understanding signed by the then-PLP opposition before the 2021 general election. Pinder says the move was a mistake. He is not the only critic; earlier this year, Bahamas National Alliance Trade Union Congress President Belinda Wilson accused Ferguson of being a political pawn. Current BPSU President Kimsley Ferguson said the union is now “crying sour grapes.” Most recently, former Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said the TUC had been hoodwinked.

Pinder emphasized that union leaders need to maintain a balance between supporting political parties and advocating for their members.
