NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It seems officials are looking for ways to transform the straw market experience and ways to create a greater cultural space.

Straw markets should be more than just markets. That’s the sentiment expressed by the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Works Bacchus Rolle.

He says the question is how to turn straw markets into cultural  spaces.

Over the years, there has been criticism that the Downtown Straw Market could use modernization or even transformation.

With The Bahamas being just one stop for the millions of cruise passengers, Rolle says a venue needs to be created that is competitive.

But what about the Family Islands which also see thousands of tourists?

Rolle says the Straw Market Authority is looking to see where the needs are for expansion.
