GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Meet Courtney Meadows, born and raised in Grand Bahama.

Courtney always had big dreams. As head boy at his high school, he earned over 20 baseball scholarships, but his true passion was for the sea.

Determined, he pursued his goal of becoming a marine pilot and was accepted into SUNY Maritime College.

“When I first attended, there was an indoctrination period for 10 days with about 370 students. I was among the top six overall, and I received a coin for my excellence.”

However, things took a dramatic turn in 2022 when he lost his father, and again in 2024 when he lost his grandfather, both men were key financial supporters of his education.

“It was heartbreaking because I studied hard, hoping to earn more scholarships. But with maritime studies being so expensive, there aren’t many scholarships available from companies or even the school.”

Courtney was forced to move back home and has now taken on an unpaid internship at Freeport Harbour.

“It’s the absolute best experience ever. Normally, you don’t get this kind of experience until you’re done or maybe in your third year. But through their scholarship program and working alongside them, I feel like a pilot myself, going on the pilot boat, climbing up the ladders, bringing in ships, and learning.”

Despite these hardships, Courtney remains optimistic. He hopes to return to SUNY Maritime College soon and is appealing for public assistance to help him get back on track.

As for his message to other young people:

“Keep a positive mind and always stay focused. Education is key, but always stay positive. No matter what challenges you face in life, it’s just a test from God. Keep going, you will overcome the tragedies you’re going through.”
