NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The newest review of manpower needs at the Public Hospitals Authority reveals the public system is in dire need of 600 nurses.

Dr. Aubynette Rolle, Public Hospitals Authority Managing Director says what makes it worse is the shortage comes as Princess Margaret Hospital is bursting at the seams.

The Bahamas is not alone. There is also a worldwide shortage of healthcare professionals.

On Sunday, PHA entered an agreement with Doctors Hospital to transfer 50 patients from PMH to Doctors Hospital West.

Rolle says this helps with relieve the pressure on the already strained healthcare workers.

The ministry of welcomed 50 Cuban nurses into the public healthcare system earlier this year, to help carry the load.

This as other countries use the local healthcare system to shop for nurses to fill their shortages.

As a result, Rolle says they’re aggressively looking to close the gap.
