CALIFORNIA – A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of California on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake occurred at 10:44 a.m. local time in the Pacific Ocean, West of Petrolia, California, the agency reported.

It was initially recorded as a 6.6 magnitude but later upgraded to 7.0.

Tremors were felt across northern California’s coastal areas and parts of the Central Valley.

Authorities reported no immediate damage following the quake.
