85% of Homes in Inagua Damaged by Hurricane Oscar

INAGUA, BAHAMAS – Residents and officials in Inagua are counting their blessings following the passage of Hurricane Oscar over the weekend.

That storm bringing adverse weather to island over the weekend, dumping rain along with heavy gusts of wind.

I accompanied Disaster Risk Management Authority officials and Cabinet Ministers as they assessed the damage and the storm left its mark.

Portions of fencing at the airport were blown down along with shingle damage to several homes.

Officials telling Our News that about roughly 92 out of the 169 homes received minor damage.

Disaster and Recovery Minister Leon Lundy says recovery efforts are underway.

Residents in the community coming together to pump gallons of brackish water left behind from the heavy rainfall dumped on the island forming this make-shift lake.

We also visited the All-Age School. It’s power now just restored days after the storm.

George Harris runs a radio show. He kept residents informed.

“At four in the morning, we were just getting some rain continuously not to hard and about four in the morning, about 10 minutes to four the power went off so I ceased broadcasting,” he said.

Acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper promised the community that relief won’t stop with Wednesday’s trip.
