TEXAS – Nine individuals, including a former mayor, a city council member, and the chief of staff to a Texas state representative, have pleaded not guilty to felony vote-harvesting charges.

The indictments, filed by Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, stem from a wide-ranging elections investigation that Latino rights advocates describe as politically motivated.

One defendant is seeking to dismiss their case, arguing that the state’s vote-harvesting law is overly broad and infringes on free speech. Convictions on the charges could carry sentences of up to ten years in prison.
