GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – At Lucaya International School, education doesn’t end when the bell rings. From the earliest years, students are encouraged to go beyond memorization, engaging in projects, presentations, and life skills that set them up for success far beyond high school.

Head of Secondary Nigel Kirkby says public speaking starts early, whether presenting to classmates or parents, and that intentional exposure builds both confidence and communication skills over time.

“Right from the early years, students present to classmates, to parents,” Kirkby explains. “That confidence starts to come out, not just in understanding the material, but in being able to communicate it clearly.”

The school’s adoption of the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework plays a central role. Designed to mirror the pace and independence of university life, the IB structure introduces students to long-term assignments, check-in points, and personal accountability.

Kirkby says that while the program is demanding, the payoff is clear. Many alumni return to share how the IB experience gave them an edge in college.

“IB was tough, don’t get me wrong,” Kirkby recalls one former student saying. “But when I got to college, I already knew how to manage my time. That meant I could focus on doing what I love.”

For Kirkby, the reward lies in seeing those students come back confident and thriving.

“It’s a good feeling when they return with a light in their eyes, saying, ‘College is fantastic. I’m learning so much, and I’m not overwhelmed.’ That tells us we did something right.”

At a time when The Bahamas is looking to nurture future leaders, Lucaya International is already doing the groundwork, developing young minds prepared not just for exams, but for the world ahead.
