GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – One high school on Grand Bahama may not be ready to welcome students when the 2022-2023 school year begins in a matter of weeks.

Now West End and Bimini Member of Parliament, Obie Wilchcombe explains the reason for the delay at Holmes Rock High School.

In 2016, contracts were signed for the construction of a new junior high school in West Grand Bahama.

The project has had its share of challenges over the years, but it was anticipated that work would be complete by summer 2022.

Wilchcombe admits there are still some issues, including the state of the pump house.

“The minister in a briefing yesterday, informed that because of a lack of supplies in Grand Bahama… its creating somewhat of a delay,” Wilchcombe says.

“If it doesn’t make September, certainly by November it will be open.”

Wilchcombe says the closure of Gold Rock is also contributing to those supply issues.

“They [Gold Rock] have been a tremendous supplier… we don’t want them to leave. They have contributed to our island. They have done well, and at the present time, we need them more than ever before. Any business shutting down in Grand Bahama is a tremendous loss,” he added.

This as Wilchcombe says he and his team are currently working on getting the various hurricane shelters prepared.
