Jamaica Monitors Impact of Cuba Power Crisis on Students

JAMAICA & CUBA – Jamaica’s government is considering what support it can provide to more than 300 Jamaican students studying in Cuba, as fuel shortages and power outages continue to disrupt classes.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith says Cabinet recently discussed the issue, confirming some Cuban institutions have temporarily closed or shifted to online learning, with one school suspending classes for six scholarship students.

She says 13 privately funded students have returned home, but most are seeking to continue their programmes.

The ministry says it has set up direct communication with students, including a WhatsApp group of about 320, as authorities monitor the situation and explore possible options with local and Cuban institutions.
