NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The National Emergency Management Agency held a press briefing to update the public on tropical storm Fiona and its potential impact in the southeastern Bahamas.

State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for the Disaster Preparedness, Management & Reconstruction Unit, Myles Laroda, said social services, the Meteorology Department, the Royal Bahamas Defense Force and the Royal Bahamas Police Force lead by NEMA Director, Captain Stephen Russell, gave acting prime minister and cabinet ministers updates on the state of preparedness.

Captain Russell said while Fiona’s predicted track has taken a more easterly turn since Friday, at noon, the Bahamas Department of Meteorology issued a hurricane alert to the southern islands, and southern residents have been asked to prepare for hurricane conditions on Tuesday morning.

The NEMA director also said transport is standing by if evacuations of residents of Mayaguana are necessary if conditions and predictions worsen and it’s decided that people in Mayaguana need to evacuate, they’ll be leaving today.

As of 2pm yesterday afternoon Tropical Storm Fiona was still over 600 miles away from the southern Bahamas.
