Bahamians at the University of South Florida Evacuate Ahead of Monster Storm Milton

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – With Hurricane Milton gaining strength and set to slam into Central Florida, the University of South Florida (USF) has ordered the evacuation of its campus including its residence halls.

Officials say the move was a precautionary one.

Bahamian Kyla Neely is an economics major at USF. She described the frantic moments leading up to the Evacuation as news of Hurricane Milton spread across the campus.

With a category four hurricane on the way, Bahamian students, far from home, are finding themselves in a difficult situation. Kyla evacuated further north to Tallahassee.

For many, this is the first time they’ve had to evacuate due to a hurricane in the United States.

Michael Munroe is another Bahamian student who didn’t want to take any risks after seeing the latest forecast and headed south to Miami.

Helping to coordinate safety measures for Bahamian students is Dr. Ruthmae Sears, a math professor and faculty advisor for the Bahamas United Impactful Students Association.

Her focus was ensuring that everyone had a plan.

Now, with evacuation orders in effect in Florida and Hurricane Milton expected to make landfall soon, the only thing left for these students to do is wait and hope the damage is minimal.
