GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – The Geographic Information Systems Department at the Grand Bahama Port Authority utilizes advanced technology to create, visualize, manage, analyze and plan the city of Freeport.

This work plays a key role in keeping the city organized and maintaining its reputation as a well-planned city.

GIS Analyst Amit Sweram says one of their department’s critical functions is to assist the leadership team in making informed decisions based on data.

The GIS Department also collaborates with the Grand Bahama Power Company to monitor streetlights tracking whether they’re on, off, or flickering.

According to Sweram, the department’s ability to communicate using maps makes their work especially impactful.

Another vital aspect of the GIS Department is assessing and locating bulk trash for sanitation services.

One of their most recent assessments occurred ahead of Hurricane Milton in October ensuring the city was prepared and organized for the threat of the storm.
