SAN SALVADOR, BAHAMAS – A trip to San Salvador would not be complete without a visit to the Dixon Hill Lighthouse.

The white, majestic lighthouse stands at 172 feet on top of Dixon’s Hill.

Constructed in 1886 by the British government, the structure which is 235 feet above sea level can be seen from every part of the island. Tour guide Janet Storr tells us more.

A quick 20-minute drive from Cockburn Town brings you to a narrow winding road that leads you uphill.

At the clearing stands the white house which is built on historic ground.

Drone shots of the surrounding areas also show ruins of what may be plantations around the island near fortune hill that are not accessible by car.

Following curiosity, I decided to climb to the top, met by about 85 steps the climb was surprisingly not difficult.

At the top a large enclosure showed the lamp, which operates to this day.
