NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The government launched a request for proposal for Family Island new energy generation via microgrids, cleaner fuel, and renewables.

The plan is to develop solar micro-grids across those islands.

Prime Minister Philip Davis says the number one focus is reducing the cost of energy and as a result of the cost of living.

The announcement comes as the government has a goal of 30 percent renewable energy by 2030.

The plan is to create more independence in energy generation on the Family Islands.

The government is inviting independent power producers to propose a comprehensive microgrid solution comprising 25 megawatts of renewable energy and an additional 90 megawatts of prime power generation.

Energy Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis says the new initiative will also address reliability issues and enhance sufficiency which will benefit consumers. It will also reduce the cost of running the systems on these islands.

As for what potential power producers will be required for each island.

The energy minister says the project will be managed locally.

The submission deadline for the RFP is January 26, 2024.

Family Island site visits will start on Monday. More information and submissions can be made through the procurement portal.

She added plans are underway for New Providence as well.
