ISTANBUL – A magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook Istanbul and surrounding parts of Turkey on Wednesday, injuring at least 236 people.

The midday quake, which occurred during a public holiday, caused widespread fear in the city of 16 million. However, authorities say there was no major damage.

With over 100 aftershocks reported, authorities urged residents to avoid damaged buildings. Meanwhile, mosques and sports halls have been opened as shelters.
