Abaco Residents Assured Power Woes Behind Them

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) is assuring Abaco residents that frequent power outages are set to become a thing of the past as the company completes major upgrades ahead of the upcoming season.

The island has faced months of recurring outages, which have disrupted daily life and forced some business owners to close early. Speaking at the weekly press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister, Northern Regional Manager Marvin Greene said BPL is prepared to meet future electricity demands.

“With the ongoing work at Wilson City, we are very confident going into the winter and the upcoming summer to be ready to meet all the demands,” Greene said.

He explained that major power units are nearing completion. “Number four, one of our major units, is 80 to 90 percent complete with its major overhaul. That unit will return to service for the first time since Hurricane Dorian. Number one will probably be finished prior to that. With the two units we currently have, we can more than cover all of Abaco,” Greene added.

In addition to the main units, Greene said 3.6 megawatts of generation will be available in Hope Town, while a 1.7-megawatt generator in Man-O-War Cay will also supply two additional cays. He emphasized that improvements are supported by increased redundancies across the Abaco cays, ensuring more reliable power even if one system fails.

Greene noted past issues were caused by a damaged Sub C cable, which created a bottleneck affecting multiple cays. “That created a ring, allowing us to feed from one direction or the other. But right now, we have a bottleneck that feeds only through Madlows Cay. If that cable fails, all those cays are impacted. We’re very pleased that a replacement cable has been procured and is in transit,” he said.
