SWAT Unit: Discipline, Endurance, Fitness, and Going the Extra Mile

NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Last week, our Jasmin Brown was back with her annual Police Month series, introducing us to the Internal Security Division.

In Tuesday’s Police Month report, she began to break down each unit that falls under ISD.

In the next story, she’s revisiting some old friends at the SWAT Team. Here’s that report.

It was back in March 2023 when I was first introduced to the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team, better known as SWAT.

That’s where I learned they’re not your ordinary officers. They’re a special group trained to handle high-risk situations with deadly precision.

Back then, they were also dubbed the police who the police call.

Years later, ISD Commander Superintendent Devaughn McCartney doesn’t disagree.

“When the officer said in your last interview that they are the elite or the officers call when the police are in trouble that is the truth. Special Weapons and Tactics. That’s who we are.”

Since then, they’ve been visible on high-risk cases like the arraignment of former FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.

They also caught the nation’s attention and support when they competed in the United Arab Emirates SWAT Challenge in Dubai back in 2024.

Now, they’re still involved in high-stakes investigations, continuing as operational support for police divisions.

Superintendent Delaney said they always get the job done.

“If you have somebody that is wanted, a high prolific offender, the SWAT element, the tactical element, they are skilled and trained to enter houses, bushes and to ensure the safety of people within the community.”

So what does it take to be a SWAT officer? I had to ask the ISD commander for his take.

Jasmin: “What is like one or two or three things you definitely need to work in that unit? “Officer: “My two SWAT officers, just step up for me please. Look at their physique, I need to say anymore? You have to be fit and willing to go the extra mile, endurance and discipline.”

There’s also a lot of training. In fact, it’s a daily occurrence, as SWAT officers always need to stay on top of their game.
