NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man charged with vandalizing the Christopher Columbus monument at Government House last year appeared before Magistrate Kendra Kelly today.

33-year-old Shervandaze Smith, who is on bail, is still awaiting trial on charges of causing $2,000 in damage to the statue of the Spanish explorer and trespassing.

Smith was arrested on October 9, 2021 on the grounds of Government House.

Smith has said he wants to plead guilty to the incident which was captured on cellphone video that went viral.

However, prosecutors are still trying to determine the true value of the monument.

The matter is now set for January 17, 2023.
