NEW YORK, U.S.A. – The New York Liberty’s path to repeat as WNBA champions could have hit a major roadblock – the reigning finals MVP will be sidelined for several weeks.
The Liberty announced that Jonquel Jones is officially out 4–6 weeks with a right ankle sprain, however, imaging shows no long-term damage.
Jones initially injured the ankle on June 3 and was out for 12 days – during that time period, the Liberty lost their first game of the season.
She re-injured the ankle June 19 in another loss to the Phoenix Mercury.
Jones has been a pillar for the Liberty–averaging 12 points, 9.6 boards, and shooting nearly 44% from three point range.
Her defensive presence and rebounding have fueled New York’s league-best defensive rating.
The Liberty will hit the road in four cities, nine games ahead of the All-Star break.
Softball
Women’s professional fastpitch began its 2025 season in The Bahamas and the Atlanta Smoke emerged as the inaugural champions of the “Queens of Paradise” series.
The Smoke concluded the three game set against the Orlando Monarchs with a 9-1 win Saturday night at the Andre Rodgers National Stadium.
Jada Cody was named the MVP after she finished 3-3 including a double and a three-run home run.
Charla Echols also had two home-runs for the smoke.
The Monarchs took game oNe 4-3 and the smoke followed with a 10-0 win in game two – powered by two home runs from Morgan Howe.
Baseball

Four Bahamians are currently in the rangers farm system and the youngest duo are off to a promising start in the Dominican Summer League.
Jayln Pinder has been ridIng an eight game hit streak for the DSL Rangers Blue and has moved to the top of the lineup.
Over the weekend, he went 2-3 against the DSL Twins on Friday, 2-5 against the DSL Pirates Gold Saturday and is hitting .333 through 39 at bats this season.
He has a .973 ops with one home run, five stolen bases, four RBI and scored 10 runs.
Dave Neely, also with tHe DSL Rangers Blue, is hitting .278 with four stolen bases, and scored four runs with a .758 ops.
In the Arizona Complex League, Rashawn Pinder is on a five game hit streak and has hit two home-runs over that time span.
His last two games were multi hit outings, 2-3 Friday night, which included a three-run go ahead home run in a 10-9 win over the ACL Mariners.
In 107 at bats, Pinder is hitting .308 with an .854 ops, two home-runs, 17 rbi, and scored 17 runs.
Meanwhile, the Bahamas Baseball Association concluded another edition of its Andre Rodgers junior nationals, and after four days of competition bragging rights were decided for 2025.
Nationals was once again a dominant show of force for freedom baseball league who won gold in the 8u, 10u, and 12u divisions all in matchups against the Grand Bahama Little League.
The 8u team won 13-0, 10u won 8-1, While 12u won 21-8. All three teams finished undefeated.
GBLL was the only organization to have teams in the gold medal game of all four divisions.
They took gold in the 14u division by default over the junior baseball league of Nassau.
