NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A man accused of hitting a police officer with his car sending him to hospital has been charged.

Cyril Liston Gaitor, 56, was arrested following the November 29 incident at Arawak Cay that left PC 4384 Antonio Bethel in hospital.

Gaitor pleaded not guilty to charges of causing grievous harm, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest when he appeared before Magistrate Shaka Serville.

Gaitor told the court that he was released from prison last August after spending more than two decades behind bars.

Gaitor said he was jailed for the 1991 armed robbery of a customs guard at the Nassau International Airport in which a police escort was shot.

Despite paying his debt to society, Gaitor said police continue to harass him.

Gaitor said he works as a straw vendor on Arawak Cay.

Serville granted Gaitor $5,000 bail and set a trial date for April 11, 2023.
